Equipment

A Piano, Digital Piano or Keyboard

When starting out, we recommend that students start with a digital piano, as it is a more affordable way to start. Although many of our piano students in Wilmslow have access to an upright piano which is also a great option. Just remember having an acoustic piano requires maintenance and can be more difficult for younger students as they can require a lot more finger strength.

Recommended Features

Look for:

  • 61 keys minimum (88 keys preferred)

  • Touch-sensitive keys (respond to finger pressure)

  • Built-in speakers

  • Sustain pedal input

  • Headphone jack

Better Long-Term Choice

An 88-key weighted digital piano feels more like a real piano and helps build proper finger strength.

Acoustic pianos will always have a sustain pedal, whereas for some digital pianos and keyboards you have to buy it seperately. Certain brands of digitals pianos have a different polarity requirement so we suggest buying a multi polarity sustain pedal.
