Ryan Phillips — Piano & Music Theory Tutor in Manchester
Over the past 12 years, Ryan has built a wealth of experience delivering excellent piano lessons across the Manchester area. He holds a BA (Hons) from Leeds Conservatoire, Grade 8 in Piano Performance, and ABRSM Grade 6 Music Theory. Ryan is fully DBS checked and has extensive experience teaching piano to children and adults alike. He was previously a 1-1 and group music tutor for Learn to Rock, where he worked with students aged 4–11, and spent 4 years as a piano tutor for Staves music school. He currently holds a one-to-one piano tutor position at Dixons Ashton Academy, helping Year 7–11 students prepare for their GCSEs. Ryan has an extremely high pass rate and has helped numerous students achieve their musical potential.
Teaching Approach
Ryan brings a fresh, fun approach, drawing on his knowledge of jazz harmony and songwriting. Rather than learning grade pieces by rote and forgetting them, his lessons help students understand how pieces are composed and how the harmony works — building a deeper understanding of the music they perform. He specialises in Pop and Jazz but has vast experience across the full ABRSM syllabus, from Initial to Grade 8.
Performing
Ryan regularly performs piano at corporate and wedding events across the UK, both as a solo pianist and with the Northern House Band. He plays at renowned venues including Grantley Hall, Rudding Park Hotel, and Sora – Malmaison. His performance experience feeds directly into lessons — students learn tasteful reharmonisation, effective soloing, and how to support a singer in a real performance setting.

“Very knowledgeable in her chosen instruments of piano and voice, reliable, and an excellent addition to the team. She had a good handful of SEN students and worked with them from the very first lesson to find what worked for each individual.”
“Ryan has been very helpful to my learning in many ways that also helps me to practice every day and enjoy it overall even if I’m not always getting it right all the time. Learning from Ryan has really helped me to get better all the time and play more. Learning more regularly all the time. Thanks Ryan.”
