Cheadle Hulme has a habit of turning up in "best places to live" surveys, and once you've spent any time around the Village — the parade of independent shops and cafes on Station Road, the Sunday-morning bustle outside the Co-op, the trains pulling into Cheadle Hulme station on the Manchester–Buxton line every twenty minutes or so — it's not hard to see why. It's a place people move to and then don't leave, which means a lot of the families I teach here have been settled for years, with pianos that have sat in the front room since a house move a decade ago, finally getting properly played.
I'm Sam Pendrill, piano and singing tutor at Phillips Music Tuition, and I teach one-to-one lessons in students' own homes across Cheadle Hulme, out towards Bramhall and Cheadle, and up towards Handforth and Stockport. I trained at the Royal Northern College of Music, specialising in both voice and piano, and hold Grade 8 in each. I've been teaching professionally for three years, and I still perform regularly — I've played with artists including Cian Ducrot and Self Esteem, appeared on the Christmas Songs of Praise alongside Tony Hadley, and gig around Manchester and the North West with my own material.
Cheadle Hulme School casts a fairly long shadow locally, and a good number of my students there are working towards music scholarships or entrance assessments, which means proper grounding in sight-reading and theory alongside the pieces themselves. But plenty of families here have nothing to do with that at all — younger children at Ladybridge or Woodley primary just starting out, or adults who've decided that this, finally, is the year they get round to it. I teach both, and the lessons look different depending on which door I've walked through: shorter pieces and plenty of encouragement for beginners, proper exam preparation for those on the ABRSM track, and whatever a returning adult actually wants to spend their hour on.
I specialise in pop, but I'm just as comfortable in classical, jazz and musical theatre, and because I trained as a vocalist too, singing lessons are available alongside piano or on their own — useful if you'd rather not juggle two different tutors, or if a student wants to work on both without adding an extra session to the week. A fair few of my Cheadle Hulme students do exactly that, particularly around school show season.
Lessons happen in your own home, wherever you are in Cheadle Hulme — near the Village, out towards Bruntwood Park, or over by Gillbent Road — so there's no extra journey tacked onto an already full week. I'm fully DBS checked, with safeguarding training in place for lessons with children.
