Guitar & Bass Lessons in Weetwood

If you're in Weetwood and looking for guitar or bass lessons, you're closer than you might think — our Leeds teaching space is just up the road at Raynel Way in Lawnswood, practically on your doorstep if you're anywhere near Weetwood Lane, St Chad's, or the Otley Road end near Weetwood Hall.

I'm Ryan Hawkins, the guitar and bass tutor at Phillips Music Tuition, and Weetwood is one of my favourite corners of Leeds to teach in. It's a leafy, quiet part of the city, tucked between the Ring Road and Headingley, with a real mix of families in the villas around St Chad's and students living nearer Leeds Beckett's Headingley campus. That mix means I get everything from complete beginners picking up a guitar for the first time to teenagers who want to get properly stuck into a Rock School grade, and adults coming back to bass after years away from an instrument.

Lessons happen in your home — no need to load an amp into the car — or you're welcome to come to the Lawnswood teaching space instead, which is a five-minute drive (or a pleasant walk down Otley Road) from most of Weetwood. Online lessons are also available if that suits your week better, particularly useful during exam season or when the weather's against us.

I studied Pop Performance (Guitar) at Leeds Conservatoire and have spent the past decade teaching and gigging around the North, including regular corporate and wedding sets with the Northern House Band at venues like Grantley Hall and Rudding Park. That performance background shapes how I teach: rather than just working through tab, I focus on ear training and chord/lead sheet reading, so students can eventually work out songs themselves rather than relying on someone else having transcribed it first. I hold ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory and know the Rock School syllabus well, so if a structured route through grades appeals — or if you'd rather just learn the songs you actually want to play — either way works.

Genre-wise, I lean towards pop, rock and soul, but I'm just as happy teaching indie, blues, or whatever a student's currently into. Most of my Weetwood students are either working towards a Rock School grade for UCAS points, learning for the pure enjoyment of it, or picking bass back up after a long break — all three get the same attention to detail.

Every new student starts with a free consultation lesson, so there's no pressure to commit before you've actually met your tutor and had a go. Lessons are £35 for 60 minutes or £18 for 30 minutes, travel included, with a straightforward 48-hour cancellation policy.

If you're in Weetwood, or nearby in Headingley, Adel, Burley, or Horsforth, get in touch and we'll find a time that works for you and your guitar or bass.
