At Phillips Music Tuition, guitar lessons in Wilmslow and Altrincham are taught by Matyas Price-Jones. He teaches at home across Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Handforth, Prestbury, Cheadle, Knutsford and Altrincham, and online if that suits your week better.
Who is Matyas?
Matyas has been playing guitar for 16 years and performing in bands since the age of 14. He graduated with a First Class degree (BA Hons Popular Music) from the Royal Northern College of Music and achieved a Distinction in Rockschool Grade 8 Guitar at 17. He is DBS checked and based in Knutsford.
He still plays live. Matyas is the guitarist and songwriter in XL Poncho, a band that has gigged across the UK, particularly in Manchester, London and Liverpool, at venues including Band on the Wall and the Deaf Institute. That experience of writing and performing feeds straight into lessons.
How lessons work
Matyas teaches acoustic and electric guitar to children and adults, from complete beginners who want to work through the grades to intermediate players looking to deepen their knowledge of the instrument. He is comfortable with both the Rockschool and Trinity syllabuses.
He is primarily a rock guitarist, with a focus on riff writing and confident, expressive playing, and he has experience across funk, pop, prog and metal. He also has a strong grasp of harmony, time signatures and rhythm, which he uses to help students understand why things work rather than just what to play. If you have ever learned a riff but could not see why it sounds the way it does, that is the gap he likes to close.
Do I need my own guitar?
It helps to have one at home so you can practise between lessons. If you are just starting out, a decent beginner guitar from around £150 to £200 is a good way to try lessons before investing in something better. Acoustic or electric is fine, so start with whichever you already have or whichever suits the music you love. Matyas is happy to give advice before you buy.
Prices and getting started
Lessons are £40 for 60 minutes, £30 for 45 minutes or £20 for 30 minutes, including travel for home lessons across Wilmslow, Altrincham and the surrounding area. If travel is over 25 minutes we add £5. Your first consultation lesson is free, with no obligation, and we have a 48-hour cancellation policy.
