Handforth sits in an odd but useful spot — close enough to Wilmslow that the two towns blur into each other along the A34, but with its own identity built around Handforth Dean, the retail park that's become the go-to for a Saturday cinema trip or a meal out before someone's Sunday practice session. I teach piano lessons in students' own homes across Handforth, from the streets around Stanley Hall Park and Wilmslow Road down towards the Fingerpost and Handforth's own railway station on the Manchester–Crewe line, which makes it an easy stop for families who commute in and out of the city.
If the name Handforth rings a bell for reasons that have nothing to do with music, you're probably thinking of Handforth Parish Council's brief spell of national fame a few years back. It's a nice icebreaker with parents at a first lesson, and it honestly captures something true about the area — a close-knit community that takes its local institutions, whether parish councils or after-school clubs, more seriously than its size would suggest.
Background
I'm Sam Pendrill, piano and vocals tutor at Phillips Music Tuition, based just up the road in Wilmslow. I'm a graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music, where I specialised in both piano and voice and hold Grade 8 in each, and I've been teaching professionally for several years. Handforth families tend to fall into two groups: children at one of the local primaries starting out on piano for the first time, and older students — often at Wilmslow High or one of the Cheadle Hulme schools — who are further into their ABRSM grades and want someone who can prepare them properly for exams rather than just get them through a piece.
What lessons look like
Lessons are built around whichever of those a student needs. For younger beginners it's short pieces, plenty of encouragement, and enough variety that practice doesn't feel like a chore. For students on the exam track, I teach the full ABRSM syllabus from Initial through to Grade 8, with proper attention to sight-reading and aural work rather than treating them as an afterthought. And because I teach voice as well as piano, singing comes up more than people expect — plenty of Handforth students end up doing both, particularly in the run-up to school shows or church services.
Away from teaching, I perform regularly across Manchester and the North West, including work with artists such as Cian Ducrot and Self Esteem, and that stage experience feeds back into lessons in ways a purely academic approach can't always offer — phrasing, feel, and what it actually takes to enjoy playing in front of people.
