Altrincham has changed a lot in the last few years. The market hall is busy most weekends, the Metrolink brings commuters in and out of the centre, and a few minutes away you are among the Victorian villas of Bowdon, the quiet streets of Hale or the green edges of Dunham Massey. It is a place where people tend to have a bit of space at home, and plenty of those houses have a piano or a digital keyboard that deserves more attention than it gets.
At Phillips Music Tuition, piano lessons in Altrincham are taught by Sidney Ng, who comes to your home. There is no studio to travel to and no rushing across town after school or work, which makes it easier to keep lessons going week after week.
Meet your Altrincham piano tutor
Sidney is a Hong Kong-born, UK-trained pianist with more than nine years of teaching experience. He holds an ARSM Diploma in Piano Performance and ABRSM Grade 8 Music Theory, and he is DBS checked. He has taught one-to-one and group lessons for learners of all ages, from complete beginners to advanced repertoire.
His approach is built around the learner: secure technique, expressive playing and sight-reading, with lessons shaped by your goals and pace. That might mean preparing for an ABRSM exam, or it might simply mean playing for pleasure. He also teaches music theory up to Grade 8, so the two can work side by side.
Sidney keeps learning too. He has spent the past four years studying with Phil Best, an award-winning RNCM graduate, and he performs with live ensembles as a drummer and keyboard player. Playing with other people feeds back into his teaching, especially rhythm and sight-reading. He speaks English, Mandarin and Cantonese, and is happy to teach in any of the three, which many families will find helpful.
Where lessons take place
Lessons are at your home across Altrincham, Hale, Hale Barns, Bowdon, Ashley and Dunham Massey. If you are not sure we cover your address, just ask and we will confirm.
Getting set up at home
You do not need a grand piano. A good-quality digital piano with weighted keys is a sensible starting point, and a beginner instrument from around £200 is a good way to try lessons before spending more. If you already have an acoustic piano at home, even better. Sidney can talk you through what matters when you are choosing or upgrading.
Prices and getting started
Lessons are £40 for 60 minutes, £30 for 45 minutes or £20 for 30 minutes, with a £5 supplement if travel is over 25 minutes. Every new student starts with a free consultation lesson, so you can meet your tutor with no obligation. We operate a 48-hour cancellation policy.
If you would like to add guitar to the household, Matyas Price-Jones also teaches guitar at home in Altrincham, and you can find out more on our guitar lessons page.
